Description

Our Flatwater Kayak Safety & Rescue course introduces essential flatwater safety practices and rescue techniques that can be performed with a minimum of equipment – in the first few minutes of an emergency. The course covers key self-rescue skills for different mobility levels, and kayak types as well as assisted rescues, rope handling skills, and more. The focus is on fast, simple, low-risk rescue techniques to manage minor in-water incidents.

What to Wear

  • Quick dry clothes

  • For any of our rescue classes participants are asked to dress for complete immersion

Things to know

Equipment

We are happy to provide you with a kayak (paddle and PFD included) to use during your class free of charge. This is particularly beneficial when you are just starting out and are still trying to figure out which kayak is right for you. If you already own a kayak it is advisable to learn and get used to your own kayak. However, we may require you to use one of our kayaks if we consider yours to be unsafe or inappropriate for the class.

Your safety is our top priority. Our kayak lessons are led by professional instructors, certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA), each with years of teaching experience. Instructors

Your lesson will be led by a trained, experienced professional with a solid teaching background, years of personal kayaking experience, and a passion for teaching. Our instructors, certified by both the American Canoe Association (ACA) and British Canoeing, are dedicated to a student-centered teaching approach, focusing on imparting the nuances of kayaking effectively.

Group Size And Age Restrictions

Our program maintains a maximum group size of 5 students, ensuring focused attention and effective instruction. In case we exceed this limit, we'll uphold a 5:1 student-to-teacher ratio to maintain quality instruction. Additionally, age restrictions are in place—participants must be 10 years or older to enroll in kayak lessons, while those under 10 require adult supervision.

Weather In Central Florida

Central Florida on average maintains warm temperatures throughout the entire year with slightly lower temperatures during the winter months. Summers, lasting from May to October, are long, warm and particularly humid. Rain showers are common during this time of the year. The winter month are short, cool, and dry, lasting from December to February. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 52°F (11°C)to 91°F (33°C).

Our Smart Start Kayaking Course provides a brief introduction to paddling a kayak and ensures that foundational skills and concepts are learned to ensure confidence and safety when exploring flatwater by kayak. Both first timers and paddlers with some paddling experience will find this course useful. This course will help you develop the good habits and foundation skills that will amp up your learning curve. Self-rescues, or how to get back in/on top of your kayak are covered as well. Kayak Paddle Strokes & Safety Primer

Our Kayak Paddle Stroke & Safety Primer is a fast-paced training course offering the paddler the opportunity to learn and refine some of the most used paddle strokes and maneuvers. Some of the strokes we will work on are: low brace, forward stroke refinement, reverse stroke, forward and reverse sweep, stern rudder, and sculling draw. In addition we will also go over the most used rescues: assisted T-rescue, and cowboy/cowgirl self-rescue and paddle float self-rescue.

Kayaking Essential

The Kayaking Essentials program continues where the Introduction to Kayaking course left off. We will refine your skills while introducing a few new strokes and the concept of edging. This 6-week course also covers advanced rescue techniques and foundational skills needed to advance to rolling class. Completion of the Introduction to Kayaking program is not required. However, this is not an introductory course and students must demonstrate the necessary prerequisite skills. The course concludes with a day paddle at Cape Canaveral National Seashore where you can put all you have learned into practice.
