Why We Paddle: 8 Miles of the Econlockhatchee River Cleaned in 4 Hours

Intro to the Effort

At Venture Outdoors, paddling is about more than recreation, it’s about stewardship. On a recent Sunday, we joined forces with volunteers and our partner HNTB to tackle litter along the Econlockhatchee River, one of Central Florida’s most scenic waterways. In just four hours, we covered 8 miles of river and left it cleaner, safer, and more vibrant for both wildlife and future adventurers.

About the Partnership

Participants of the river cleanup

This cleanup was powered by collaboration with HNTB, an infrastructure solutions firm with a long history of community involvement. While their expertise is in designing and delivering transportation systems, their mission goes deeper. They are all about shaping sustainable, livable communities. That commitment aligns perfectly with our values at Venture Outdoors: connecting people with natural spaces while protecting the ecosystems that make those experiences possible. Together, we proved that when organizations with shared values unite, real impact happens.

The Logistics of the Cleanup

The plan was straightforward but ambitious: launch kayaks and canoes along the Econlockhatchee, fan out in small teams, and collect as much debris as possible. Our role at Venture Outdoors was to provide gear, safety orientation, and river expertise so volunteers could focus on the task at hand.

  • Volunteers paddled 8 miles of winding riverbanks.

  • Teams removed a wide variety of litter, from bottles and cans to fishing lines tangled in branches.

By the end of the day, the collective effort filled boatloads of trash bags. It wasn’t glamorous work, but the results were undeniable: stretches of river that looked renewed, healthier, and ready for wildlife and paddlers alike.

What’s to Come

Participants are getting ready to paddle the 8-miles to cleanup the Econlockhatchee River.

The success of this cleanup was more than a one-time win. Venture Outdoors and HNTB are committing to make this a biannual tradition. Twice a year, we’ll return to the Econlockhatchee to continue this work — ensuring that the river doesn’t just stay clean, but becomes a model of how communities can care for their natural spaces.

Spreading the Word

Efforts like this matter most when they inspire others. If you paddle, hike, or simply love the outdoors, we invite you to share this story. Every conversation helps raise awareness of the good happening in our rivers and trails and may encourage more people to join us next time.

Together, we’re proving that paddling can be more than a pastime. It can be a way to give back, to heal our waterways, and to ensure the next generation experiences the same beauty we do.
